January 24, 2009 Beaufort – 2007 – Israel – Hebrew w. English subtitles – 120 min. Winner of 4 Ophir Awards (the Israeli Oscar), the Academy Award nominee for best foreign language film (disqualified because 51% of the dialogue is in English), and Israel’s biggest box office success of 2007, this taut and brilliant war film suggests that the futility of war is inseparable from its nobility. The plot is based on the true story of a young Israeli soldier ordered in 2000 to the Lebanese front to protect a 12th century fortress. He now must deal with constantly changing military and political agendas while the position he is holding seems hopeless. The relationships among the soldiers, moral dilemmas and heroism as well as absurdity are interwoven throughout.
February 21, 2009 Making Trouble – 2007 – USA – English – 85 minutes. Sitting around a kosher deli table, four contemporary comediennes discuss the current state of women in comedy vs. the past. Through archival footage and interviews this clever and delightful documentary tells the stories of six Jewish female comic performers with whom we all are familiar. Featured are Fanny Brice, Molly Picon, Gilda Radner, Joan Rivers, Sophie Tucker, and Wendy Wasserstein. “The schmoozing is contagious, hilarious and fully entertaining.” Baltimore Jewish Film Festival, 2008. Produced by the Jewish Women’s Archive; Director: Rachel Talbot.
March 21, 2009 My Mexican Shiva – 2006 – Mexico – Span.,Yidd., Hebr., w Eng. subtitles – 102 min. Here, finally, is the film so many of our patrons have been urging us to show. “Featuring a raucous mariachi inflected score by the Klezmatics, this dark comedy generates authentic moments of reconciliation and hilarious escapades in the face of loss.” Washington Jewish Film Festival, 2007. Suddenly dying at a mariachi banquet in Mexico City, Moishe Tartakovsky, a patriarch and lead actor in a theatre group, is hovered over by two angels, who are trying to decide from the mourners whether Moishe will leave with the good or the bad angel. The colorful gathering of quirky family, friends and lovers makes for a film full of characters and action that will hold you enthralled. Come and enjoy!
April 18, 2009 Jellyfish – 2007 – Israel/France – Hebrew w. English subtitles – 78 min. “A Magical Glow! Altogether Charming! Refreshingly Playful!” A. O Scott, The New York Times. Winner Camera d’Or Cannes Film Festival for 2007. Telling the story of 3 young women of modern Tel Aviv whose totally diverse coexisting stories weave an unlikely portrait of modern Israeli life, this film has beautiful imagery and a quiet humor. The introduction of a mysterious child into the life of one of the women lends a mystical quality. “… A shimmering allegory about nurturing (or the lack thereof).” World Jewish Digest, May 2008.
